Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is a useful label for improving visibility in AI-assisted search, but it is not a separate technical standard. Google says its established SEO guidance still applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special markup or secret optimisation required. OpenAI's clearest publisher requirement is more basic: make public content accessible to OAI-SearchBot if you want it considered for ChatGPT search summaries and citations.
For a UK business, the sensible goal is not to 'hack' a model or guarantee a citation. It is to publish the clearest, most useful and best-supported answer for the questions your customers ask, then make that answer crawlable, indexable and easy to verify. Those improvements help conventional search and AI features at the same time.
What AI-search visibility actually means
AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT search can surface links within a generated response rather than only in a traditional ranked list. A visibility event may therefore be a linked citation, a supporting source or a referral visit. These surfaces can introduce a business to people who might not have discovered it through a classic result, but appearance and traffic are query-dependent and never guaranteed.
Google's AI features use the same core eligibility and quality foundations as Search. That means a page still needs to be crawlable, indexable, useful and trustworthy. Clear structure helps readers and machines understand it, but headings, schema or an 'answer-first' paragraph are not automatic citation switches.
Six foundations worth improving
- 1Crawler access: Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot must be able to reach the public pages you want surfaced. Check robots.txt, CDN rules, bot protection and response codes.
- 2Indexable pages: use stable URLs, self-consistent canonicals, crawlable internal links and XML sitemaps. A blocked or noindex page is not a GEO opportunity.
- 3A satisfying answer: explain the subject directly, then add the detail, trade-offs and next steps a real customer needs to make a decision.
- 4Original value: publish first-hand experience, data, examples, comparisons, photographs, demonstrations or analysis that a generic summary cannot replace.
- 5Verifiable identity: keep your organisation name, services, location, authorship and contact information accurate and consistent across the site and reputable third-party profiles.
- 6Useful media and page experience: descriptive images, video where appropriate, accessible HTML, mobile usability and sensible performance all help people engage with the source.
A practical GEO checklist for UK businesses
1. Start with the customer decision, not the keyword
Choose the pages closest to a commercial decision: a service, comparison, pricing explanation, location page, case study or specialist guide. Write down the question the visitor needs answered and the evidence they would need to trust the answer.
A strong opening usually identifies the subject, the audience and the practical outcome without forcing the reader through a long brand preamble. There is no official 60- or 90-word rule; clarity and completeness matter more than a formula.
2. Add evidence only your business can provide
Replace generic advice with evidence: anonymised project results, methodology, original photographs, delivery constraints, prices or price ranges, local observations and clearly dated examples. A Northampton dental clinic might explain its actual referral process and regulatory context; a SaaS team might publish a reproducible performance comparison. Do not add names or statistics merely to appear authoritative.
3. Make identity and local relevance unambiguous
State who provides the service, where it is available, who wrote or reviewed the page and how a customer can verify the business. Keep names, addresses, opening hours and service areas aligned with your Google Business Profile and other authoritative listings. For regulated sectors, link to the appropriate register rather than making vague trust claims.
4. Use structured data accurately—not as an AI shortcut
Use supported schema types that describe visible page content, such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article or BreadcrumbList where appropriate. Structured data helps search systems understand a page and can enable search features, but Google explicitly says no special schema is required for its AI features. Complete, accurate markup is more valuable than a large graph of unsupported claims.

}5. Earn corroboration without manufacturing it
Independent coverage, relevant links, reviews and professional profiles can help users verify a business. Pursue them because they are credible and useful to your audience, not because a directory promises 'AI citations'. Paid link schemes, mass guest posts and fabricated reviews remain poor SEO practice regardless of the GEO label.
- Contribute original data or expert commentary to relevant industry publications.
- Publish case studies with the client's permission and enough detail to be useful.
- Maintain accurate profiles on genuine trade, professional and local organisations.
- Turn interviews, webinars and podcasts into accessible pages with summaries or transcripts.
6. Control crawler access intentionally
OAI-SearchBot is used for ChatGPT search discovery and is distinct from GPTBot, which relates to potential model training. A publisher can allow OAI-SearchBot while making a separate choice about GPTBot. Check that your robots.txt decision is deliberate and that a firewall or CDN is not silently returning 403 or 429 responses to the crawler you intend to allow.
How to measure AI-search visibility in 2026
Measurement is improving, but it is not identical across platforms. Separate visibility, referral traffic and business outcomes so a growing impression count is not mistaken for commercial success.
- 1Google Search Console: use the Generative AI performance report if your property has access. It reports impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date; Google is still rolling it out.
- 2ChatGPT referrals: segment visits containing utm_source=chatgpt.com. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds this parameter to referral URLs, making visits and downstream conversions measurable in analytics.
- 3Manual prompt tracking: use a small, stable set of real customer questions and record whether you appear, which page is cited and the date. Treat this as directional research because responses vary by wording, location, model and time.
- 4Commercial outcomes: track qualified enquiries, bookings, assisted conversions and branded demand from AI referrals. Visibility without a useful next action is not a complete KPI.
What not to do
- Do not create dozens of thin pages that restate the same generic answer for slightly different prompts.
- Do not add unsupported statistics, fake author credentials or invented first-hand experience.
- Do not expect FAQ schema, llms.txt or a special file to guarantee inclusion in Google AI features.
- Do not block the crawlers you want to reach, and do not assume robots.txt alone controls every form of indexing or training.
- Do not report a citation as success unless the cited page helps the right visitor take a useful next step.
A focused seven-day action plan
- 1Choose one commercially important page and write down the customer question it must fully answer.
- 2Check its status code, canonical, indexability, internal links and presence in the XML sitemap.
- 3Review robots.txt and edge-security logs for Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot access.
- 4Replace generic claims with one original example, process detail, image, result or expert explanation.
- 5Make the opening and headings easy to scan, then verify that the full page remains useful beyond the summary.
- 6Validate visible facts against structured data and external business profiles.
- 7Record baseline Search Console data, ChatGPT referrals and conversions before measuring changes over time.
Common GEO questions
Do I need special schema for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special optimisations for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use supported structured data when it accurately describes visible content, and continue following core SEO guidance.
Can a business guarantee a ChatGPT citation?
No. Allowing OAI-SearchBot makes public content eligible to be discovered, but relevance, response generation and citation choices vary. Any agency promising guaranteed placement should explain exactly what it controls and provide evidence.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Crawlability, indexability, helpful content, site reputation, internal links and page experience remain the foundation. GEO is best understood as a way to apply those disciplines to AI-assisted discovery and measurement.
“Build the page a customer would be relieved to find: direct enough to understand, detailed enough to trust and original enough to cite.”
